A farm raises cows and chickens. The farmer has a total of 46 animals. One day he counts the legs of all his animals and realizes he has a total of 156 legs. How many cows does the farmer have?

Explanation:

lets note a= chickens

b=cows

a+b=46

also = chickens has 2 legs, cow=4 legs

2a+4b=156..........we divide this equation by 2 so we can work with smaller numbers

a+2b=78 or we cam write a=78-2b

lets replace in the first equation a+b=46

78-2b+b=46

-b=46-78

-b=-32 multiply by -1

b=32

so we have 32 cows with 128 legs

a+32=46

a=14 chickens with 28 legs
