When the Bunsen burners quit working at cooper JHS, students had to use candles to heat up their lab samples. At the beginning of class, the candle was 12 cm tall. By the end of class, the candles were 8 cm tall. Did a chemical reaction take place, yes or no? what evidence or lack of evidence do you have to support your answer?

Yes! A chemical reaction had took place as even if it seems like it is not a chemical reaction, it still had a reaction towards the wax on the candle that made it melt from heat.
