The answer is It soothed the sectional rivalries between North and South. Why? Well, the United States had ended the Mexican-American War with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In terms of this treaty, the United States received over 50% of Mexico’s territory. With all of this newly earned land, the North and South would soon quarrel over the decision of slavery in these new states. Because of this, the war tensed sectional rivalries if anything. In addition to this, the Gold Rush fled everybody to California, which then entered as a free state under the Compromise of 1850.
