In 1513, just after he was obliged to leave Florence as a political exile, Machiavelli wrote The Prince. Dedicated to Lorenzo de 'Medici, the book is the advice of Machiavelli to Florence's new ruler on how to remain in power. It was also his attempt to obtain an advisory role in the Medici government, although unsuccessful. Not until five years after the death of Machiavelli was The Prince released. The theories of Machiavelli were read, contemplated, and debated by leaders as diverse as Oliver Cromwell, Frederick the Great, Louis XIV, Napoleon I, Otto von Bismarck, and John F. Kennedy.
