Here are my 3 maxims for arguments, including argumentative essays.
- It is an essay, not a novel. Write just enough to get your point across. The standard format is 5 parts - intro, 3 points for your argument that you must explain, followed by a conclusion.
- You are here to argue your stand. That means you have an opinion about the argument that you must explain to the reader, and why that opinion is correct. Don’t vacillate, be exact about your opinion.
- The only way to argue is through verifiable facts, logic, and philosophy. Resorting to “God wills it” or “it is so because that’s the way it is” are not winning arguments.
