Use the strategy of mental math to find the total amount she will save. Then, write a division equation to see if she will save enough 5. Timothy says he can solve this problem a different way. He says that he can compare 84 x 10 and 74 x 18. Do you agree? Explain your thinking.

Answer:

No she will not save enough money for her trip and she needs $122 more for her trip.

Explanation:

Deborah requires $74 each day for 13 days trip

Total least amount needed for the trip = 74*13

= $962

Deborah's saving strategy : she saves $84 per month for 10 months

saved amount at the end of the 10th month = 84*10 = $840

840/10 = $84

This clearly shows she is not saving enough money for her trip. She needs $122 more to support the expense of her trip.

Timothy way

84*10= $840 is to be compared with 74*18 = $1332

This method is also not a feasible one for calculating Deborah's expenses of her trip.
