Answer:

The moon orbits the earth because of the pull of the earth and so does the earth orbits the sun because of its pull. Because of the way they move relative to each other, we see phases of the moon and eclipses.

The moon appear completely dark once a month because at that time of the month, the moon passes through the same part of the sky, with it's dark or unilluminated side faces Earth.
