In the novel, the lead character Hester Prynne is forced to wear a red A on her chest as a punishment for committing an adultery. It was meant a public humiliation and she was ostracized from the rest of the people. During 17th century sexual relations outside of marriage was considered a sin. It was especially dangerous for women.
