As the lines on the shape shows, angle S is congruent to angle Q so you would have to write the expression 4x + 12 = 5x - 3.

Try to get rid of the smaller coefficient which is 4x. So subtract 4x - 4x and 5x - 5x. This would leave you with 12 = x - 3. (Remember 1x = x)

Try to get the variable alone so add 3 to the constants, so -3 + 3 and 12 + 3 which leaves you with 15 = x.

Now all you need to do is replace the x in the angle S expression.

4(15) + 12 = ?

4 * 15 = 60

Then 60 + 12 = 72 degrees.
