Read this excerpt from the myth Psyche's Promise.
Psyche wept many tears over breaking her promise. She desperately longed for her husband and searched the earth for him. Finally, Psyche approached her mother-in-law for help in winning back Eros's trust and love. Aphrodite decided to test Psyche. First, Aphrodite challenged Psyche to collect and sort a collection of wheat, beans, and lentils. A group of ants helped Psyche to complete the first task. Next, Psyche had to collect golden fleece from the wild sheep of the sun. A reed told her to gather the fleece from the briers, where the sheep's wool would get caught. Then, Aphrodite demanded that Psyche fill a jar with poisonous water from the source of the Styx river. The water was guarded by two mighty dragons. An eagle sent from Zeus aided Psyche in completing this impossible task.
"You cannot possibly have accomplished all of these tasks by yourself," exploded Aphrodite. "For your final task, you will travel to the underworld and bring back a box of beauty."
Psyche trembled. No mortal returned from the land of the dead. Just then, the building's tower came alive. It instructed Psyche on how to complete her dreadful quest. The tower warned her not to look in the box, and Psyche promised to follow his instructions. After a long and hazardous journey, Psyche emerged from the underworld with the box of beauty.
