Chicago, Reborn

1 On October 8, 1871, the great city of Chicago, Illinois, was destroyed by a massive fire. Many people believe the fire was started by a cow in a local barn. While the exact cause is unknown, the tragedy changed the city forever. Chicago was the second most populated city in America at the time of the fire. Since the entire business district was destroyed in the blaze, rebuilding was quite a task. The townspeople needed leadership, direction, and inspiration so that all hope would not be lost.

Keeping the Faith
2 Initially, the people of Chicago were in shock. However, in the days that followed, their determination was shown. New businesses began to spring up all over the city. Rubble from the fire was cleared away. Large amounts were dumped into the lake, creating new areas to rebuild on. Important services like grocery stores and post offices were moved to buildings left standing.

3 One brave and inspiring Chicagoan was William D. Kerfoot. William bought and sold houses and business property in Chicago before the fire struck. The day after the fire ended, William went to the location where his office once stood and saw that it was completely destroyed. He could have lost hope and gone home. Instead, he reopened his business by simply setting up a few temporary walls on the pile where his office used to be. He did not believe in quitting and posted a sign that read: “All gone but WIFE CHILDREN and ENERGY.” This showed that he was going to persevere no matter what, it and inspired other business owners to do the same.

4 There was also a need for new leadership. The citizens of Chicago elected Joseph Medill as their new mayor within a month of the fire. He promised to make sure the city followed new and improved building and fire codes. The codes required new buildings to be built using fireproof materials, like brick. He also promised that the rebuilding of the city was his main focus. The people of Chicago needed someone to believe in and follow at this time. They wanted someone who would work hard to keep this kind of disaster from happening again.

The Plan Comes Together
5 Thanks to the leadership and inspiration of the people of Chicago, not only was the city rebuilt, it became better than it ever was before. The effort to rebuild Chicago created many job opportunities and helped the economy grow. The population also grew as people came to the area searching for open jobs. With a clean slate to start with, architects were able to build a safer and more modernized city, including the opportunity to build some of the world’s first skyscrapers.

Answer:

The reason Chicago had a huge fire was because Chicago was made out of wood. They soon discovered new materials that could trap in fire or keep fire out, and one of those materials was brick. "The codes required new buildings to be built using fireproof materials, like brick."
