All linear equations can be represented as y=mx+b.

We know y must be 5 when x is 6, so we can say that

5 = m*6 + b

Likewise, y is 13 when x is 12 so

13 = m*12 + b

I am going to take the second equation (13 = 12m + b) and subtract 5 from both sides.

This gives

8 = 12m+b -5

We know from the first equation that 5 = 6m+b. So we can substitute that into 8 = 12m +b -5.

8 = 12m+b - (6m+b)

8=12m+b -6m -b

8 = 6m

m = 8/6 = 4/3

Now take the first equation (5 = 6m + b) and replace m with 4/3

5 = 6*4/3 + b

5 = 8 + b

b = -3
