The Japanese assault had a few significant points. To begin with, it planned to devastate significant American armada units, accordingly keeping the American Fleet from meddling with the Japanese success of the Dutch East Indies and Malaya and to empower Japan to vanquish Southeast Asia without impedance. The attack on Pearl Harbor left in excess of 2,400 Americans dead and stunned the country, sending shockwaves of dread and outrage from the West Coast toward the East. The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tended to Congress, requesting that they proclaim battle on Japan, which they did by a nearly consistent vote.
