Answer:
I can give you a few points as to why he is unreliable.
Unreliable:
-there are some parts of the story where nick
is drunk
-nick is easily swayed by beauty or alcohol. Like when he finds himself falling for Jordan even though he describes her as “incurably dishonest” (Fitzgerald 58). His opinion of people is easily tainted.
-there are certain times where the reader may be suspicious of nick, like when he said he rarely gets drunk but gets drunk numerous times in the story. He contradicts himself a lot
-from what I remember nick may be mentally unstable. There are parts of the story that are clearly left out.
-while nick does describe the other characters in detail, he seems to have some sort of prejudice or judgement towards them.
-the story is told in first person so there narrator has to be unreliable at some point.
A few quotes:
-“so everything that happened has a dim, hazy cast over it” (fitzgerald 29).
-“I have been drunk just twice in my life, and the second time was that afternoon” (Fitzgerald 29).
-“I was on my way to get roaring drunk from sheer embarrassment...” (Fitzgerald 42).
-“beauty and the beast... loneliness... old grocery horse... brook’n bridge” (Fitzgerald 38). (The dots represent large gaps of time)
