Alice is a sensible English girl. She believes in being good. She thinks it is wrong to cheat. She is also curious, which is a trait that prompts her to pass through the looking glass. Alice’s logical and sensible ways clash with the wacky ways of everyone in Wonderland. This clash begins when she meets the Red Queen who tells her she must run as fast as she can to stay in the same place. Alice argues that if you did that you would usually get to some other place. The White Queen decides to hire Alice as her maid and offers her two pence a week and jam every other day. When Alice says she doesn’t want any jam today, the White Queen tells her, “The rule is, jam tomorrow and jam yesterday—but never jam today.”

Initially Alice is confused by such events. She also finds herself confused by Humpty Dumpty's claim that he pays a word extra when he asks it to do more work. But throughout her journey she does her best to be polite and tries to understand the strange workings of Wonderland. Eventually she figures out how to work her way around this odd world.

Considered in this way, she is the perfect foil, or counterpoint, or contrast, for all the unsocial, bad-mannered eccentrics whom she meets in Wonderland.
