Given:

Price of golf after tax = $460

Rate of sales tax = 9%

To find:

The amount of tax.

Solution:

Let x be the price of golf before tax.

According to the question,

Price of golf after tax = Price of golf before tax + tax

460=x+(9)/(100)x

460=x+0.09x

460=1.09x

Divide both sides by 1.09.

(460)/(1.09)=x

422.01835=x

x\approx 422

So, price of golf before tax is $422.

Now,

tax = (9)/(100)x

tax = (9)/(100)(422)

tax =(3798)/(100)

tax=37.98

Therefore, the amount of tax is $37.98.
