At the beginning of the 19th century, European knowledge of geography of Sub-Saharan Africa was still rather limited; it was left to 19th-century European explorers (including those searching for the famed source of the Nile) to discover detail such as the continent’s geological makeup

Imperialism was on the rise, and European nations looked to countries across the seas. The Berlin Conference was a meeting with the European leaders to determine how they would divide up Africa. There were no African leaders in the conference. They claimed that if you occupied the land, you have the right to take it over. The Europeans used social Darwinism to justify their actions.
