Anti-Semitic prejudice was widespread in Shakespeare’s time. They knew that Jews did not believe in Jesus so they thought they must not respect the Queen. Jewish were often merchants and could collect interest. Jews were often portrayed as villains. Jews were discriminated against. They had to practice their religion secretly. Jews were banned from living in England for many years although some lived there secretly. Legally Jews had few rights. They could not hold land.
