They gave what they did because they truly loved the other person. There is a spirit that is found in love that is found in no other emotion we experience as humans. And if we give a gift, we always have the other person in mind, and that spirit flows from us to them. B is so much the right answer that there is not much point in showing why the other answers do not qualify as good answers.

C: Della and Jim don't need to learn anything about generosity. They are expressing love and that is far beyond generous. Not C

D: The whole point of the story is that they choose the exact gift the other wanted and they worked hard to obtain it. The answer can never be D.

A: It would make no sense for them to give the same gifts as the magi. The magi gave their gifts without knowing the receiver the way Della and Jim knew each other.
