Winston has just gone grocery shopping. The mean cost for each item in his bag was $3.32. He bought a total of 5 items, and the prices of 4 of those items are listed below:

$3.30,$3.79,$2.31,$2.51
Determine the price of the 5th item in his bag.

Answer: $4.69

Explanation:

The mean is all of the values added together divided by the number of values

Let's write out an equation for this and use x as the 5th value


(3.30+3.79+2.31+2.51+x)/(5) =3.32

Step 1: Multiply both sides by 5

This will cancel out the 5 on the left


(3.30+3.79+2.31+2.51+x)/(5) (5)=3.32(5)\\3.30+3.79+2.31+2.51+x=16.60

Step 2: Simplify

So that everything is added together


11.91+x=16.60

Step 3: Subtract 11.91 from both sides

So we can find out the value of x


11.91-11.91+x=16.60-11.91\\x= 4.69
