i. The distance between two towns is 15.4 cm apart. What is the actual distance between
these two towns in metres?

Explanation:

we define x to be the actual distance, y to be the distance on map (y=15.4cm)

if the map scale is 3:750, then by definition of scaling, x and y must satisfy:


(y)/(x) = (3)/(750) = (1)/(150)

we isolate x:


x = 150 * y = 150 * 15.4 = 2310cm = 23.1m
