Answer:

Jeff’s speed is 7 mph

Jon’s speed is 6 mph

Explanation:

Since the time spent by each is same, let us call the number of hours x

Mathematically;

Time = distance/speed

Let us call Jeff’s speed y

x = 14/y ••••••(i)

For Jon

he hiked 1 mph slower, so his speed will be (y-1) mph

x = 12/(y-1)

Since x is equal in both cases

14/y = 12/y-1

14(y-1) = 12y

14y -14 = 12y

14y-12y = 14

2y = 14

y = 14/2

y = 7 mph

Jon is 1 mph slower which is 7-1 = 6 mph
