By separating the power between the branches of government, they were making sure that the United States' government was much more of a limited government rather than that of Britain's. This was all to avoid making one branch of the government too powerful. The idea of checks and balances was initially brought by Federalism, though the Federalist system of government only had two branches rather than three.
