Answer:

He bought 2 notebooks.

Explanation:

Step 1. Find how much he paid

£8 - £0.85 = £7.15

Find how much he paid for the items we know the price and numbers he bought.

3 pencils = 3 * £0.21 = £0.63

2 pens = 2 * £0.37 = £0.74

3 sharpeners = 3 * £0.86 = £2.58

Total of pencils, pens and sharpeners = £0.63 + £0.74 + £2.58 = £3.95

Subtract this total from what he paid:

£7.15 - £3.95 = £3.20

He paid £3.20 for a number of notebooks that cost £1.60 a piece.

£3.20/£1.60 = 2

Answer: He bought 2 notebooks.

£8 - 0.85 = £7.15 Spent.

3 Pencils = 63p
2 Pens = 74p
3 Sharpeners = £2.58
All together = £3.95

£7.15 - £3.95 = £3.20

So he spent £3.20 on notebooks.
£3.20 / £1.60 = 2

The answer is: 2 Notebooks.
