Lois Lowry at times leaves events that should be familiar to readers unidentified. For example, she doesn't identify the Giver's memories of a winter holiday as Christmas. Why do you think she makes this choice?

Because no one celebrates them in the town they are in. And the protagonist is just learning about the real world and he doesn’t really understand everything yet, so describing without naming is how the author makes sure we can understand as readers, but highlights the fact he doesn’t understand what it is.
