Answer:

See below

Explanation:

Please do not delete my answer again.....it is correct...or the figure is INcorrect !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more time : (assuming right angles at all corners)

the UNlabelled side of the larger rectangle CANNOT BE 5 cm!

it has a diagonal of 8 cm !

use pythagorean theoem

8^2 = 5^2 + s^2 shows s = sqrt (39)

then area of the outside rectangle is 5 sqrt(39) cm^2

( see attached diagram)

Shaded area is 4 x 3 =12 cm^2

UN shaded is 5 sqrt (39) - 12 cm^2 = 19.22 cm^2

Rest side of rectangle

  • √8²-5²
  • √64-25
  • √39
  • 6.2

Now

Area of whole rectangle

  • LB
  • 5(6.2)
  • 31cm²

Area of shaded rectangle

  • 4(3)
  • 12cm²

Area of unshaded region

  • 31-12
  • 19cm²
