Givethanks, an Indian, wants to have a turkey dinner. He and his “dog”, Wolf, go looking for a turkey. While on this turkey hunt, they come across a field of corn. Givethanks just has to have some of the corn and picks some to take home. While in the corn field, Givethanks spots the biggest turkey he has ever seen and captures it. On the way home to his village, Givethanks and Wolf come to a river where there is a small boat that will only fit Givethanks and one other thing. Now, Givethanks wants to get Wolf, the turkey and the corn across the river, but Wolf will eat the turkey if they are left alone and the turkey will eat the corn if it is left alone with the corn.

Final answer:

Givethanks should use a sequence of trips to ensure that neither the turkey nor the corn is left alone with another item that could be eaten. By taking the turkey across first, then the Wolf, and switching the turkey with the corn, and finally bringing the turkey back across, Givethanks can safely transport all three across the river.

Step-by-step explanation:

The scenario presented is similar to a classic river-crossing puzzle.

Givethanks needs to figure out how to transport his dog named Wolf, a turkey, and some corn across a river using a small boat. Wolf cannot be left alone with the turkey, and the turkey cannot be left alone with the corn, as one will eat the other.

Step-by-step solution:

Givethanks takes the turkey across the river and leaves it on the other side.

He returns alone to the side where the corn and Wolf are waiting.

He then takes Wolf across the river.

Once on the other side, he leaves Wolf but takes the turkey back with him to the original side.

Givethanks leaves the turkey and takes the corn across the river.

He leaves the corn with Wolf and returns to get the turkey.

Finally, he takes the turkey across the river again.

This sequence of trips ensures that the turkey is not left alone with the corn, Wolf is not left alone with the turkey, and all three reach the other side of the river safely.
