The vice president of the United States is the second highest official in the U.S. government just under the president. The Constitution gives the VP little duties except that he or she is to be prepared to take the office of president in case the president is unable or unwilling to continue. The Constitution also makes the VP the president of the Senate and can cast the tying vote in the Senate.
