Answer:

The Spanish-American War was a warlike conflict that took place in 1898 between Spain and the United States, both in the Caribbean Sea and in the Atlantic Ocean. The war ended with an American victory, which made Spain cede Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the United States, as well as America temporarily occupy the island of Cuba.

In this regard, there were two very different positions in America: one of them, annexationist, advocated the incorporation of the territories acquired from the United States in full, including Cuba; while the other defended the autonomy of the acquired territories, in order to guarantee the independence of these nations from Spain.
