Here we used the following equations

Let us assume the number of magazines be x

ANd, the number of books be y

x + y = 60 .............(1)

2x+ 3y = $160 ..........(2)

Now multiply with 2 in the equation 2

Then it comes

2x + 2y = 120

2x + 3y = 160

Solve these equations

y = 40

Now the x value is

x + 40 = 60

x = 20

Hence, the number of magazines purchased is 20
