At 13:00, a water tank contained 180 litres of water. Water flowed from the tank at a constant rate until, at 17:30, the tank was completely empty. Calculate the rate of flow of water from the tank in litres per hour. If your answer is a decimal, give it to 1 d.p.

Answer: 40

Explanation:

so from 13:00 to 17:30 is 4h 30 which is 270 min

Therefore 270m = 180ml

The drain rate is constant and thus equal to the average drain rate over the entire 4.5 hour period. This rate is

(0 \,\mathrm L - 180 \,\mathrm L)/(4.5 \,\rm h) = -40 (\rm L)/(\rm h)

which is to say, water flows from the tank at a rate of 40 L/h.
