At that time, the British empire imposed an unfair rate of taxation to the colonists. They incurred a lot of debt from their war against France. Imposing high tax rate to the colonists is the only method they could think of in order to pay off that debt.

But, many of the colonists chose to rebel and not following the order from the British government. This was the reason why the sent soldiers to Boston in order to impose this tax laws. Since the Colonists' economy was weak to begin with, this tax only hurt The Colonists' economy even more.
