Copper chloride cannot be produced by reacting copper with hydrochloric acid, why?

The equation that you’re looking at is Cu (copper) + HCl (hydrochloric acid) —> CuCl (copper chloride). This doesn’t work because copper chloride doesn’t contain hydrogen. The equation would only work if the reactants were chlorine and copper only.
