Given:

Seed below the ground =
3(1)/(4)\text{ in.}

Total length of plant =
11(1)/(2)\text{ in.}

To find:

The length of plane above the ground.

Solution:

We have,

Plant below the ground =
3(1)/(4)\text{ in.}

Total length of plant =
11(1)/(2)\text{ in.}

Plant above the ground = Total length of plant - Plant below the ground

=11(1)/(2)-3(1)/(4)

=(11* 2+1)/(2)-(3* 4+1)/(4)

=(22+1)/(2)-(12+1)/(4)

=(23)/(2)-(13)/(4)

Taking LCM, we get

=(46-13)/(4)

=(33)/(4)

=8(1)/(4)

Therefore, the length of plant above the ground is
8(1)/(4)\text{ in.}
