The end of a dogs leash is attached to the top of a 5 foot tall fence the dog is 7 feet away from the base of the fence post how long is the leash to the nearest tenth of a foot

We solve this using Pythagoras Theorem

a² + b² = c²

c = Longest side of a right angled triangle = Hypotenuse

From the question

Length of the fence = a = 5 feet

Distant from the base of the fence = b = 7 feet

Length of the leash = Hypotenuse = c

Hence,

5² + 7² = c²

c² = 25 + 49

c = √74

c = 8.602325267 feet

Approximately to the nearest tenth of a foot the length of the leash = 8.6 feet
