Their are three different types of irony. Dramatic irony, verbal irony and situational irony. Dramatic irony is when the reader knows more than the character. Verbal irony is when someone says something that they don't mean. Situational irony is when the opposite is true. Irony is added to literature to emphasize an idea and create conflict, tension, suspense etc. An ironic ending can also be an ending that is up for interpretation unlike any ambiguous ending.
