A shop has a total of 84 gold, silver and bronze medals for sale. The number of gold, silver and bronze medals are in the ratio 1 : 2 : 3. Find the number of each medal.

Explanation:

From the ratio and the sum we get equations:

  • g : s : b = 1 : 2 : 3
  • g + s + b = 84

Let each whole part of ratio is x, then:

  • g = x, s = 2x, b = 3x
  • x+ 2x + 3x = 84
  • 6x = 84
  • x = 14

The number of each medal:

  • gold = 1*14 = 14
  • silver = 2*14 = 28
  • bronze = 3*14 = 42
