How are the goals of a collaborative discussion different from the goals of a debate?

Debates are heated, you want to win and get your idea into the other persons head. You want people to listen to you and think that you are right not your opponent, and you will do anything to get this. Collaborative discussions are more tame, you have your opinion you want the other person to understand, but they are not your opponent. They are someone with a differing opinion who want you to understand their side. You acknowledge the other persons opinion and wonder if you are wrong. In conclusion the goal of a debate is to win, the goal of a collaborative discussion is to get your idea heard and understood.
