Meg receives 10% commission on her first $5000 in sales. She receives 20% commission on any sales beyond the first $5000. Bonus: Do the amount of sales and Meg's commission form a proportional relationship? Why or why not?

Answer: There is no proportional relationship in commission and sales.

Explanation:

to show a proportional relationship between two variables x and y , we write them as:

y= mx, where m = proportionality constant.

Let y = commission, x= sales , m= commission percent

Till x= $5000 , commission percent = 10%

Beyond x= $5000 , commission percent = 20%

i.e. m is not constant, but as x increases y also increases.

Hence, there is no proportional relationship in commission and sales.
