What did the French do when the British moved into the upper part of

The French moved into a land that was claimed by both the British and colonies and the French, They needed the American Indians living there to be their allies. The French wanted the their priests and traders to be able to move freely through the area... and so They kept control of the Ohio River - and to keep the British out.
