A lead block is suspended by means of a string from the underside of a 8.00 kg block of wood of density of 696 kg/m3. If the upper surface of the wood is just level with the water, what is the tension in the string?(The density of lead is 11340 kg/m3)

Answer:

35.2 N

Step-by-step explanation:

Density of water= 1000kg/m³

Density of lead = 11,340 kg/m³

acceleration due to gravity=9.8m/s^2

From Archimedes principle, when an object is immersed in a fluid, it will have a buoyant force which is equal to the force of gravity the displaced fluid has in magnitude

FB= Vρg

Where v= volume of the fluid

ρ=density of the fluid

g= acceleration due to gravity=9.8m/s^2

The density= (Density of lead-Density of water)

=( 11,340 kg/m³- 1000kg/m³)

= 10340kg/m³

volume of the fluid= 3.47 x 10⁻⁴

Then substitute

Force=10340kg/m³×3.47 x 10⁻⁴×9.81

= 35.2 N

Therefore, the tension in the string is

35.2 N
