yard is an amount of area equivalent to a 1-yard by 1-yard square. Jane buys 1/2 a square yard of cloth with a striped pattern, and 1/3 of a square yard of cloth with a floral pattern. How much total cloth did Jane purchase?

Answer: She bought 5/6 square yard

Explanation:

Change the fractions to Least Common Multiple equivalents then add

1/2 = 3/6

1/3 = 2/6

3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
