Gaius Julius Caesar was born in Rome on July 12 or 13 100 BCE. Born into an upper class family, Caesar and some of his relatives held important positions in the government. 409 years before Julius was born the Republic of Rome was a dangerous time. The republic was being governed by a Senate. Senates were elected by the people of Rome. When Rome was growing in population, it made it more difficult to govern. Senators fought amongst themselves for more power. The working class became frustrated with the noble class governing. It lead to civil wars in the republic. Caesar aligned himself with people who were against the nobility. He started his share in politics as an advocate in 78 BCE. He decided to study oratory in Rhodes, Greece in 76 BCE. During the trip he was captured by pirates. They held him for ransom money. Caesar got the ransom money himself and got released. Instead of retiring to his homeland, Caesar decided to organize a naval force that captured the pirates. Two years later, in 74 BCE, with no official place in the Roman government or army, Caesar decided to organize a private army. This army fought off the king of Pontus who was declaring war on the Romans. All of these events made Caesar well known and a public disagreement. He moved his way through different political positions in a dishonest way. Although Roman Senates disliked Caesar, they appointed him Farther Spain. In 59 BCE, Caesar was elected into consul no matter the Senate’s attempts to prevent it. Consuls had significant power and Caesar took advantage of this power. He formed the first triumvirate. He combined his power with Pompey and Crassus. Crassus was a wealthy politician and Pompey was a war hero who was not liked among the Senates.
