4. Why were the slaves treated like they were on the ships to the Americas?

Answer:

They were seen as less than human in the eyes of the white men who sought to make a profit off the slave trade. To them the only purpose they served was free labor and therefore didn't need any sort of nice treatment just needed to survive the passage to the Americas (middle passage).
