More often than not, specially with the increasingly competitive nature of elections parties are more interested in vote getting than in promoting the public good. In fact, since parties emerge from different perspectives of what the public good is in the first place, it is very difficult to promote it.

Parties are platforms for ideas and interests, they are not bad themselves, but they can be captured by private interests who are in clear conflict with the general good. Parties and politicians some time go great lengths to justify private interests as good for the public. Of course this is a generalization, but most of the time parties are more concern with their own interests than with the public good.
