You have no more than $60 to spend. You want a drink that costs $1.50 including tax, and you want to buy a pair of pants, which will have 4% sales tax. What is the inequality that represents the pre-tax price of a pair of pants that you can afford if you buy the drink?

Answer: 1.50 + 0.04p≤ 60

Explanation:

Let p = pre-tax price of pair of pants

Given: sales tax on pants = 4% = 0.04

Cost of drink = $1.50

Total cost = 1.50+0.04p

Required inequality : Total cost ≤ 60 [As you cannot spend more than that]

i.e. 1.50 + 0.04p≤ 60

Hence, the inequality that represents the pre-tax price of a pair of pants that you can afford if you buy the drink:1.50 + 0.04p≤ 60
