Tom has 2 pieces of wood. One is 45 inches and the other is 65 inches long. He wants to cut both of wood into smaller pieces so that all the pieces are the same length. If he wants the pieces to be as long as possible, how long should each piece be? How many total pieces will he have?

Answer:

Each piece will be 5 inches long and the total number of pieces will be 22

Explanation:

For all the pieces to be of the same length, it means the chosen length must be a number which is a factor of both 45 and 65

The number which is the same factor as both asides 1 will be 5

So he intends having the length of each of the pieces to be 5 inches each

In the 45 inches, the number of pieces he will get will be 45/5 = 9 pieces

In the 65 inches, the number of pieces he will get will be 65/5 = 13 pieces

The number of total pieces will be 13 + 9 = 22 pieces
