How do you turn a number in standard form into a number in scientific notation

Answer:

You move the decimal to the left until the whole number is one digit.

If the number is a decimal, move the decimal to the right until it is one digit, the exponent will be negative.

For example:

123456. ---->1.2345*10^5

The 5 comes from moving the decimal 5 spaces to the left

.00012345 --->1.2345*
10^-^4

The -4 comes from moving the decimal exponent 4 spaces to the right.
