If the company is planning to produce 1,750 containers of crunchy peanut butter, how many of these containers should be the new extra crunchy variety, and how many of these containers should be the regular crunchy peanut butter? What would be helpful in solving this problem? Does one of our comparison statements above help us?

Answer:

The first part of the question is missing. I looked for the missing information and found that this question is about a new crunchier peanut butter. This crunchier peanut butter is preferred by customers at a 5:4 ratio (taken from the comparison statements). Therefore, the company will make 5/9 of its production following the new recipe.

Since 1,750 containers will be produced in total, 5/9 should be the new crunchier variety and 4/9 should be the regular one.

  • new crunchier peanut butter = 1,750 x 5/9 = 972.2 ≈ 972 containers
  • regular peanut butter = 1,750 - 972 = 778 containers
