The dog park is 13 mile wide and 12 mile long. Shayna walks her dog, Buster, around the perimeter of the dog park two times. Explain how you determined whether Shayna and Buster walk more or less than 3 miles.

Answer: More than 3 miles

=============================================================

Step-by-step explanation:

We're given a 1/3 by 1/2 rectangle. The perimeter is:

P = 2(L+W)

P = 2(1/3+1/2)

P = 2(2/6+3/6)

P = 2(5/6)

P = 10/6

P = 5/3

The rectangle has a perimeter of 5/3 miles, which is equivalent to the mixed number of 1 & 2/3.

--------------

If Shayna and her dog walked the perimeter once, then the answer would be "less than 3 miles".

However, they walked around the park twice. We'll need to double the result.

2*(5/3) = 10/3 = 3 & 1/3

Therefore, they walked more than 3 miles.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

PERIMETER = 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/2 + 1/2 = 2/3 + 1 = 1 2/3 miles for 1 LAP.

For 2 LAPS, 2 x 1 2/3 = (2 x 1) + 2(2/3) = 2 + 4/3 = 2 + 1 1/3 = 3 1/3 miles

Or, 2 x 1 2/3 = 6/3 x 5/3 = 30/9 = 3 3/9 = 3 1/3 miles

Or, 2/1 x 5/3 = 10/3 = 3 1/3 miles

ANSWER: MORE THAN 3 MILES
